Governor Cuomo signs a bill to demand insurers end their nonsense on refusing treatment for addicts in NY. From our experience with addicts and insurance companies, the addicts are viewed as the black sheep of the health care system and every possible corner is cut to limit reimbursement for their services. In the recent years with the opiate epidemic in full swing and the implementation of the Affordable Care Act insurance companies have made it a point to limit their costs on treating addiction. The victims of these decisions are obviously the addicts themselves as well as the treatment providers. Quality substance abuse treatment is vey labor intensive and has high costs to stay open. With so many thousands of people needing treatment and too few beds for demand the only hope is for insurance company’s to hop on the solution train instead of the denial train. The only way we see for this to happen with the large commercial insurance carriers is for politicians and lawmakers to step in and help those who have elected them implement laws to protect their needs!
